Japanese folded patchwork tutorial

Update (8 May 2010):
Thanks so much to Rachel who has linked my post - check out all the great tutorials she finds at oneprettything.com

and thanks to Samurai mom, I now know the "real" name of this patchwork pattern: Cathedral Windows!
----------

I call it japanese folded patchwork but I'm not sure of the "real" name moreover I have seen various versions of it on the internet - ( for which btw I would be very glad to find some tutorials)

But for now this is how I was taught by my mother, so it is a special post that I would like to share with you today.

First the base: cut squares that you will fold "a la origami style" - bringing the points of the square to the center like so and press

Then flip the square over and fold it again in the same way

Attach the squares by sewing the sides together like so (using a whip stitch)
what you see on the picture is the back of the patchwork

Then I secure the "points" of each square with some stiches like so

Now comes the fun part: choosing fabric and cutting square shapes that should be about 1-2 mm smaller that the area they cover - see the pic

I fold the outer base fabric on the colored square so that it overlaps it a bit and start sewing from the corner with an invisible stitch, I sew the base fabric together at the corner so as to enclose the square in it - if that makes sense - and repeat with the four sides and you're done !

Soap Cake with roses

Loving Tone Finnanger's style (Tilda), I recently purchased this book: "Sew Sunny Homestyle"

Tried to reproduce the soap cake, where she uses "whipped soap" - I followed the instructions from the SoapQueenTV video and used an old layered soap I had made some time ago as the base for the cake - I have to say it was difficult for me to obtain the frosting effect because the mass cools so fast that it looses very quickly it's fluidity, I guess it might help to have a microwave to heat it faster and rework it (?)

How to sew binding - bias tape at the corners

While trying to do some "memory cards" out of fabric, I realised I have a lot to learn about sewing the binding, and found three videos on youtube to illustrate three steps:

1. First step to sew the binding at the corners on the wrong side of your work

2. How to finish off the corners on the other side of the work

3. How to get a nice not too visible " join of the ends of the binding

Panduro lykkepose challenge

Some time ago, I went to do a razzia of lykkepose at Panduro (well by that I mean actually buying two bags...) I just can't resist the "surprise" effect...

So among other cool stuff there were a lot of .. pipe cleaners!?:^% yes and what now ?

That is for me a quite a challenging thing to work with... so here is what I came up with... a pipe cleaner bracelet!

Cut two rectangles the size of the pipe-cleaner + seam allowance, sewed them toghether and inserted the pipe-cleaner inside - the nice thing about it is - that the bracelet can be shaped on the wrist

Another nice idea I found on the net was this one from Practically Spent: the Pipe-cleaner stamp, great idea!

Patchwork Baby Blanket

My other half bought some time ago some articles from H&M that didn't fit, I got to inherit them

and thought I would do a little blanket for our son with elephant figures - a favourite in the house:

I made one elephant that could be attached and detached from the blanket with velcro-scratch. I realise now that one can buy brown velcro for the back of the elephant...it would have looked nicer, note to myself for next time...

Eddie Cap - Mushroom Villagers tutorial

Found this super cute cap with a great tutorial from Mushroom villagers, via the blog Sew Chic and Unique - she has great links to all sort of tutorials, I love it!

Here comes my first attempt to sew the Eddie cap, it's a bit "wobbly" in some places but all in all it was great fun and definitely made for a no-sewer expert like me :-)

Felt things...

Recently discovered [via Krudtuglensmor] a blog full of felt creations : Creativity Blog - it's so cute and so inspiring ! Here is my attempt to do some homemade items.. it's the first time I see the use of a straight stich , which gives a very nice finish to the project. Whereas I have often seen the blanket stitch being used when working with felt.

Egg covers

I'm going bananas with the Easter theme this year.... a last minute gift inspired by what I saw in a little pottery shop in my neighbourhood:

Here is my version

Happy Easter to everyone :-)
